WE ARE THE SPIT
Backwash is a glorious, chaotic ensemble of surfing culture and how we see it.
The core of issue four's 176 pages is Atlantic Islands and we will continue planting one tree in County Clare for every copy that we sell. This is the heart of Backwash, what is left behind when the wave recedes.
Photography on this website is by Manu Miguelez, Sam J Burdall, Wouter Struyf, Sergio Villalba, Al Mackinnon, James Bowden and Chris McClean.
I love being in the ocean and exposure to wild places. That’s what body surfing represents to me. It’s about putting myself in a situation where I’m uncomfortable and I’m vulnerable to all the elements of nature and at the mercy of the energy of the earth.
Bodysurfing makes you feel really small. I don’t like this idea of people feeling like they need to conquer the earth or waves whatever it is and I think it really puts you in your place to feel like a very-very small part of this world. Bodysurfing makes me feel very alive and connected.
